UK launch of the Heart Health Charter

National Heart Forum

Posted on 10/01/2008 17:34:00

Description:
The Charter was launched in the United Kingdom at an event jointly hosted by the National Heart Forum (NHF), the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS). Speaking at the launch event in London on 9 October 2007 were Peter Hollins, chief executive of the BHF, Dr Nick Boon, president of the BCS, Dr Jane Flint, BCS member of council and Sir Alexander Macara, chairman of the NHF. The launch was attended by around 40 representatives from NGOs, academic institutions, parliament and the health services.

A major contribution towards the Heart Health Charter in the UK is the formation of a new Cardio and Vascular Coalition of 29 voluntary organisations with an interest in promoting and protecting cardiovascular health in England. The scope and purpose of the Coalition is to work with and influence central government and local commissioners to ensure that cardiovascular health is high on their agenda.

Launch of the European Heart Health Charter in Italy

Italian Association Against Thrombosis and Italian Heart Foundation

Italian Federation of Cardiology
Posted on 14/12/2007 10:58:00

Description:
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the number one killer in the world. CVD kill more than 4.3 million people in the WHO European Region, 1.9 million in the EU Member States, and some 250,000 in Italy [more women (55%) than men (45%)] each year. It is important also to underline that CVD are one of the most important causes of disability; so it is not possible to forget the impact of the costs of CVD.
The annual direct and indirect costs for coronary heart disease were $142.5 billion in 2006 in the U.S. and they continue to rise (Harv Bus Rev 2004;82:64-76, 136). In the European Union, the costs for CVD were €169 billion in 2003 (EHJ 2006; 27:1610-1619). The direct and indirect costs of the CVD in Italy in 2003 were € 16.9 billion.
We can prevent CVD, but how can we do it?
The answer is easy: we must act on cardiovascular risk. Recently it has been published an important article on NEJM where the authors showed the decline of death from CVD and in this article the 44% of the decline is attributed to the action on risk factors, including reductions in total cholesterol (24%), systolic blood pressure (20%), smoking (12%), and physical inactivity (5%), despite an increase in obesity and diabetes, which accounted for an increase in deaths of 8% and 10%, respectively) (NEJM 2007;356:2388-98).
Prevention is important to prevent CVD and to reduce the costs, but the individual alone is not able to reach this important results, he must be supported by the institutions and the family. All these concepts were included in the European Heart Health Charter; ALT and FIpC agreed to launch the Charter in Italy, in collaboration with the Italian Federation of Cardiology (FIC). The event took place on Thursday 15th November 2007 in Milan.
A press conference was organised at Palazzo Marino, City Hall of Milan, in the presence of about 50 children, "Ambassadors" and “Witnesses” of the Charter commitments.
The initiative was organized under the auspices, among the others, of the Italian Ministry, of Health, National Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Milan Council of Health, Milan Council for Family, Education and Social Policies and Office for Education of Lombardia Region.
Carla De Albertis, Health Councillor of Milan, first presented the Charter, underling how the commitments of the document are very much in line with Milan’s objectives in terms of prevention and education for its citizens.
During the press conference, children, wearing the European Charter T-shirt, together with authorities, professionals and journalists involved, released red heart-shaped balloons and symbolically spread the word on the importance of preventing cardiovascular diseases.
The event continued with the speeches of Lidia Rota Vender, president of ALT, Rodolfo Paoletti, president of FIpC, Giuseppe Di Pasquale, president of FIC and Aldo Genghi, deputy director of the Office for Education of Lombardia Region.
Several rappresentatives of press, TVs and radios participated in the press conference and all the speakers were interviewed by journalists.
The Charter was also signed by Central Direction of Health Council of Milan, National Federation of the Associations of Cardiopatic Patients (CONACUORE), Italian Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SISF) and Italian Society of Gender Health and Medicine.
The Istituto Superiore di Sanità/National Instituite of Health also confirmed its endorsement after the event took place.
Other signatories will be asked to endorse the Charter in order to have more support in this new developing alliance.

Testimonials

"The key element has been that all these associations, federations, and societies interested in promoting cardiovascular health have been working together. Instead of pulling and pushing and claiming one disease deserves more attention than another, everyone has recognised that that CVD is really the essential element in all these diseases - in acute infarction, in heart failure, in diabetes, and stroke, and hypertension."

Chair of the ESC Committee for European Union Relations, - Co-Director of Cardiovascular Centre, Aalst, Belgium
